New Guinness World Record set at Keele University Library

A massive well done to Matthew Carr and Fraser Greenroyd who have secured the new Guinness World Record for the longest chess tournament at around 8am this morning.

The previous record of 40 hours and 20 minutes has been exceeded by some distance as Matthew and Fraser managed 44 hours and 02 minutes.

They are now taking a well earned rest - I'm sure you will join me in congratulating them for a job well done!

Guinness World Record attempt

At Midday today in the main entrance of Keele Campus Library, Matthew Carr and Fraser Greenroyd, both Computer Science students at Keele, began a world record attempt to play the longest Chess Tournament.

The current record stands at 40 hours and 20 minutes so the guys expect to break that record on Wednesday morning!  They are raising money for a local children's charity whilst doing this so please come along and give them your support and help them help others whilst they make a bid for a Guinness World Record.

Extended Summer Opening

We are pleased to announce that the Campus Library will be opening until 10pm Monday to Thursday throughout Summer vacation.  There will be a limited counter service available from 5pm onwards but we are sure this extension in opening times will be a popular move.

Also to note, the Info Point enquiries service will be available again throughout Summer vacation, (9-5pm, Monday to Friday).  If you need advice on using databases or Library's software including RefWorks and Encore Synergy, or want any help getting your hands on relevant reading material, please pop along and see the Info Point team.

Springer Protocols

A new resource to Keele Unviersity library users, to access go to http://www.springerprotocols.com/index.vm

Used primarily in the life sciences, protocols provide individual sets of instructions to allow scientists to recreate experiments in their own laboratories.  These documents provide written procedural methods in the design and implementation of experiments that describe the safety, bias, procedures, equipment, statistical methods, reporting, and troubleshooting standards to be used in order to successfully conduct the experiment.

SpringerProtocols combines the world’s largest collection of protocols with advanced search functionality.  Each protocol is in four sections—Introduction, Materials, Methods, Notes—so that information will always be exactly where you expect to find it.

SpringerProtocols contains more than 28,000 protocols, most of which come from the classic book series Methods in Molecular Biology.  Each protocol is a chapter of a book, and each book is a collection of protocols on a given research topic.

Finalists: books for library fines

If you are in your final year at Keele and have any outstanding Library fines, we would be willing to accept book donations against the value of these.
  • Any books offered should be in good condition and cited on reading lists;
  • We reserve the right not to accept books and wouldn't offer more than a third of the value of the book when new;
  • We are unable to give out cash but would offset the amount offered against the value of any Library fines you may still owe.
Please go to the counters at either the Campus or Health Libraries if you would like more details.
